High School Student Planet Book

We had a student from the high school come over to share a book about planets that he wrote and illustrated himself. It was a neat way for the kids to see and get ideas for their own writings. He even gave each of us a Milky Way candy bar!

Election Day

Today we learned all about the Election! The read many election books, watched videos, played an election game and even had our own 2nd grade election. It was a VERY close race. Barack Obama won with 11 votes. Mitt Romney came in second with 10 votes. The kids loved it. Thank you to Karen Knapp for decorating the voting box! :)

It's getting SPOOKY in HERE!

We started the day working on our haunted house writings. The kids are writing a persuasive writing trying to sell a haunted house! Too cute! After the kids finish their final copy of their writing they get to create their own haunted house using paper, string, bags, craft sticks or any supplies we can find in the cupboard. It is SO cool to see their creativity! We have some really neat haunted houses!

Character Counts Week is Coming!

Character Counts will be this coming week. We will have dress up days on the 22nd-26th. There will be an assembly on the 23rd for Character Counts. During the week we will discuss things related to Character Counts. We are looking forward to another fun week. Quilt Lady

Sumdog

There is a very neat website for the kids to practice math facts. It is called Sumdog. There are a bunch of fun (addicting) games on here. The kids each have their own log in code and password. Please allow the kids to play this at home. It tracks their progress and I can see how they are doing. As we will be transiting from the computers to iPads we will not be able to use this cite as much because it doesn't work on the iPads. The kids all love playing Sumdog. Recap of the Day....Tuesday, September 4th (Written by the kids)

Today we learned about pioneers. We did a KWL chart for pioneers. We worked on our summer writing. Some people are working on their final copy of their writing. They are doing it on the computer. We had library check out and SMART today. We didn't have very much time to eat lunch. It was a busy place today! Thursday we will start our Apple Valley Unit. We will learn lots more about pioneers. We reviewed how to do read to partner during Daily 5. In math, we worked on our Whiz Kids, played a game on the iPod and did a math problem.

2nd Grade

We have had a great 1st week. This week is assessment filled. Just getting those beginning of the year tests out of the way. I know the kids will be happy when those are over! We did start our Pioneer unit today in social studies by starting to read Little House in the Big Woods. I have many fun activities planned to go along with that. I am so proud of the kids. I can tell many of them worked hard over the summer. Their reading and writing has improved already. They can already say we have been writing ALOT more! :) I am looking forward to sharing many more accomplishments form the year with you.

Snack

Just a reminder...The new snack program will begin next week. Please send the snack money as soon as possible. We are really excited to begin this new program. I know it will make things a lot easier and more cost friendly for families! :)

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to school and welcome to 2nd GRADE!!! I hope that everyone has had a fantastic summer. I know that I personally have, but it sure seems to have flown. I am so excited to get the school year started. First of all I would like to thank each family for allowing me the opportunity to have your child in my class again this year. I am just thrilled to have the privilege of having your child two years in a row. I have many fun activities planned that we will be able to get started on right away since I already know the kids! How neat is that. So thank you again for sharing your child with me! :) Please remember that I did move to a different classroom. We are now in the 2nd grade pod! We aren't off by ourselves anymore! My new classroom was previously the Guidance room. I hope to see everyone at Open House in a week from today!! Open House will be on Thursday, August 23. Open House is from 5:00-6:00. The kids may bring all their supplies to Open House so they don't have to hall as much to school on the 1st day! I am looking forward to seeing everyone and seeing how much the kids have grown. I have seen a few kids over the summer and WOW they getting SO tall!! Anxious to see everyone. Enjoy the last couple weeks of summer! Mrs. Naatjes

Math Problems the Kids Created

This last week of school the kids have been creating and solving their own word problems. They had some very challenging and creative story problems! Below are the story problems they wrote and they way they thought about solving the problem. I am very proud they are all thinking about numbers in different ways. Almost every student used relational thinking! I was so proud!

These are pictures of our animal reports we completed on a dolphin. The students used the website called Lino It. They put facts about dolphins on a stick note and pasted that onto their page. The kids LOVE this program. They use it all the time for different topics during writing time.
